Yellow-legged Gulls
Sighting of Yellow Darvic rings
Where Yellow-legged Gulls go in the first years of life?
In the Azores, the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis atlantis ) is the only resident seabird throughout the year and potentially an endemic species. Despite its occurrence throughout the year in the archipelago, trends, demographics and population dynamics are still unknown.
The University of the Azores, in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation Aranzadi and Asas do Mar - Institute of Marine Ornithology of the Azores, has been developing a project to ring the offspring with yellow ring with an alpha-numeric code in different islands of the Azores since 2017 to discover some aspects of the biology of this species that remain unknown.
The main objectives of this study are:
-
Determine the distribution of seagulls within the archipelago and the distance to which they move from their colonies (including areas outside the Azores);
-
Determinants of juvenile survival and maximum gull longevity.
