Welcome to the 2025 
International Macaronesian Seabirds Photo Contest!

Participation is free and open to the general public.

The Seabirds of Macaronesia photography contest will open for entries on World Seabird Day,

3 July 2025, and close on 15 October 2025

 

The contest is free to enter and is open to all members of the public. 

The aim of our contest is to celebrate the beauty and amazing life histories of seabirds and to highlight the importance of their conservation

 

We accept photographs taken on any type of camera, including mobile phones, and welcome submissions from anyone with an interest in seabirds


We strongly encourage amateur photographers to participate and offer a separate category for those under 18 – the Young Photographer Award

OBJECTIVES

  1. To promote the observation and appreciation of seabirds in the broad area of Macaronesia, which comprises the Azores, the Canary Islands, the Madeira archipelago, Cape Verde, and surrounding oceans.

  2. To act as a public challenge to discover more about the biodiversity, natural history, and habitats of Macaronesian seabirds and the threats they face.

RULES

  • Disturbing seabirds or approaching them too closely to obtain a “better” photograph is expressly prohibited 

  • Participants declare pictures were taken in full compliance with the regulations of the place where they were taken

  • Prize-winning images from previous Asas do Mar contests are not eligible

  • The Young Photographer Award is open to entrants younger than 18 years on 15 October 2025

  • A maximum of 5 images may be entered

  • Digital editing should be kept to a minimum

    • Cropping should be limited, and resampling is forbidden

    • The use of any kind of generative artificial intelligence is not allowed 

    • See the full rules for additional technical requirements

  • The species photographed must appear in this list

  • Do NOT include YOUR NAME in image titles, file names, or image metadata

JUDGES

Kirstin Jones

Naturalist, photographer, and sailor with almost 30 years of experience observing seabirds worldwide. She has specialized knowledge in identifying and photographing pelagic species in the sea and is passionate about the marine environment and its protection.
